Live music is a life-enhancing thing

A brilliant weekend followed a fairly typical one in school (i.e. pastoral issues aplenty, mock exam panic for Yr11s and assemblies on bullying and remembrance). And why was the weekend so brilliant I hear you cry? It was not a win on the lottery coupled with the collapse of the current government under the weight of their own hypocrisy.

No, it was attending two fabulous but completely different gigs plus booking my tickets for the cinema release of Harvest Time the Neil Young film for the 1st December.

Friday night the lone troubadour Josh Rouse entertained a very small crowd in a beautifully intimate venue near Cambridge where he entertained us all royally with his pithy witticisms and wonderful songs. Delivered in fine style at one point whilst walking amongst the audience.

Saturday night I turned out to support the ever-suffering Mrs H as her Gospel choir took Northampton by storm. There were 168 singers, a band and conductor all on one stage and boy oh boy did they make a racket.

And both gigs left me feeling jubilant that the world has returned to being a place where these events can take place that bring us all together in such a communion. What a great thing live music is.

In honour of the above this week’s sounds are some Josh Rouse, some Mavis Staples and Levon Helm (not strictly Gospel but you know where I’m coming from) and just because I can some Jesse Sykes – what a voice!

As ever take what you want or need.
